Tokyo Online University and NTTe-Sports announced the signing of a partnership agreement on October 24, 2025, aiming to expand educational opportunities and human resource development through e-sports. The cooperation between Tokyo Online University, which provides a fully online learning environment, and NTTe-Sports, which promotes e-sports education nationwide, will create a new form of learning in which students can develop their IT skills and human resources in a well-balanced manner.

In recent years, the popularity of e-sports in Japan has been growing year by year, and it is predicted that the number of fans will exceed 10 million by 2025. However, the system to connect e-sports to academics and careers is still in its infancy. In this collaboration, the educational resources of the University of Tokyo Online University in the fields of IT, management, AI, and data science will be combined with NTTe-Sports' e-sports coaching know-how to jointly develop practical educational content. This will help students acquire skills that will enable them to be active in a wide range of industries through e-sports, and will also support the career development of students who wish to work in e-sports-related companies.
The NTTe-Sports School offers carefully selected subjects from the curriculum of the Tokyo Online University that are useful in the field of e-sports. In addition, the University will provide opportunities for exchange that transcend the boundaries of high school and university, such as lectures given by faculty members and joint e-sports events. A key feature of the program is that students can experience practical learning that fosters IT skills and personal development.
At the Tokyo Online University, 6,151 students (as of April 1, 2025) from all over Japan and abroad are studying completely online, and the course retention rate is 94%. NTTe-Sports, on the other hand, supports e-sports club activities at high schools nationwide and focuses on "developing human resources who will lead the future of their communities".
Educational collaboration centered on e-sports will be a new form of learning that goes beyond games. How will the next-generation educational model created by the Tokyo Online University and NTTe-Sports open up the future for students? We cannot take our eyes off the future developments.
