TGS 16th time exhibitor! Osaka Electro-Communication University
Osaka Electro-Communication University's booth exhibited 7 games created by students and other next generation creators.
While many of the creators were university students, the work that caught my attention most was "Dimensional Magic" by Osaka Electro-Communication University "High School", a game that allows players to teleport themselves, teleport projectiles from enemies, and replace space with "Dimensional Magic". This is a 2D action game in which the player aims for the goal by making full use of "Dimensional Magic" that replaces space.
When I actually tried the game, I enjoyed the unique sense of control and got more and more addicted to it...!
We interviewed Daiki Hirose, the creator of "Dimensional Magic," who is currently a junior in high school!
Interview with Daiki Hirose, creator of "Dimensional Magic"
- "Dimensional Magic" is a unique and interesting game in which the player moves through the stage using two rings that can move in space.
Hirose: When I first started making the game, I thought about the concept and how to make the game interesting. I thought it would be fun to cut out the screen and warp into it, and I thought it would be possible to create various gimmicks, so I tried it.
- So you are the only high school student in the booth?
Hirose: Yes, I am a junior at Osaka Electro-Communication University High School.
- Tell us about the appeal of your high school.
Hirose: As the name "Electro-Communication" implies, we have a well-developed curriculum in the information field. There are classes on electric circuits and other programming techniques. In the digital game course, which I am currently enrolled in, there is a class on game fundamentals, so students can start making games in high school.
- Was it difficult to learn how to make your own games from scratch?
Hirose: I started making games in my first year, and from there I was hooked on making games. This game itself was also something I started making as a club activity, and I enjoy it very much, so I don't think of it as a hardship.
- How many games did you make in three years?
Hirose: There have been many titles, but I have not been able to make a game of a quality that I am satisfied with. I have been making games for a long time, so if you ask me how many games I have made... many. There are games that I started with the idea that it would be fun to have a game like this, and then the design gradually fell apart, and in the end I was never able to complete it. It's like repeating the same process over and over again.
- Do you all like games?
Hirose: I think most people do. Recently, I've been hooked on FromSoftware's Dark Souls.
- Please give a message to junior high school students who are aiming for Osaka Electro-Communication University High School and those who are wondering about their future path.
Hirose: We have a lot of club activities such as programming, information science, and hardware. I am in the Information Processing Club, and in the Mechatronics Club we make robots called line tracers. We also have an electronics club where we make hardware-related things. There are a variety of club activities, and the school provides a good environment for learning about programming and information systems, so if you are interested, please come to the school!
"Osaka Electro-Communication University High School" and "Osaka Electro-Communication University " will continue to nurture and produce talented young game creators!
