Announced with great fanfare at The Game Awards 2025 in December 2025, Mega Man: Dual Override is scheduled for release in 2027 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the series, and was featured as a playable demo at Tokyo Game Show 2026 (TGS2026)!
In this article, we bring you our post-demo hands-on review!

First and Foremost, This Must Be Said!!
To put it simply, it was incredibly fun!
The classic, timeless aspects of Mega Man and fresh modern elements coexist seamlessly.
Anyone who enjoyed past entries in the Mega Man series, especially the previous title Mega Man 11, has plenty of reason to be excited.
A Closer Look at the Highlights!
Mega Man Traditions Preserved in the Best Way Possible!
This title essentially serves as what could be called Mega Man 12.
The core gameplay cherished ever since the original entry remains completely intact in this latest installment.
The series' signature system allowing players to choose the order in which they tackle stages remains alive and well.
However, in this hands-on demo, play was locked to the Twinkle Girl stage.
On the action front, the fundamentals remain the same: jumping, firing the Mega Buster, and battling with Special Weapons acquired from defeated bosses.
Saiga NAK
In addition to these, this title also allows players to use the Charge Shot and slide.
While these mechanics have varied across different installments, their inclusion here mirrors the previous title, Mega Man 11.
Basic movement mechanics also carry over faithfully from past games, such as jump height adjusting depending on how firmly you press the button.
The controls are responsive and snappy, ensuring seamless, fluid movement throughout.
Known for its notorious difficulty, the series hasn't lost its sharp edge.
Hopping between precarious footholds, dodging attacks, and dispatching enemies while advancing sounds simple in words, but let your guard down for a second and the iconic death sound rings out.
In fact, during our roughly 20-minute demo, we lost count of how many mistakes we made...
These quintessential elements that define what makes Mega Man truly Mega Man remain firmly intact.
New Mechanics and Adjustments Are All Incredibly Smooth!
While this title largely continues the trajectory of past installments, adjustments to previously criticized elements and an array of new mechanics feel uniformly comfortable.
Even within a brief hands-on session, the experience felt thoroughly satisfying.
The first change that immediately stood out in a positive way was dividing each boss stage into three sections.
In past titles, some stages made the trek to the boss feel overly lengthy.
This design choice cleanly addresses that issue.
Recent entries in the series have also faced criticism regarding overall content volume.
We were deeply impressed by this design approach, which clearly seeks to address that feedback.
Each segmented section takes roughly 5 minutes to clear when progressing smoothly.
This also makes it much easier to find natural stopping points when taking a break.
One of the major new additions is the Custom Chip System.
By selecting a chip set before heading into a stage, players can alter and enhance Mega Man's capabilities.
In this hands-on demo, players could choose from the following three variations:
- Survival Focus: Barrier and E-Tank available
- Firepower Focus: Charge Shot builds automatically and enables Double Charge Shots
- No Chip Support: Mega Man receives no enhancements, but support mech Rush can be summoned
This fundamentally alters how the game feels to play.
In particular, the automatic Charge Shot buildup when choosing Firepower Focus proves immensely convenient.
In past games, this author regularly remapped controls to make holding charges easier, but that no longer seems necessary.
While it remains unclear whether additional chips will appear in the retail release, having a wide variety of chips would offer fresh replayability across the same stages, leaving a strong positive impression.
Beyond the Custom Chip System, additional action mechanics are included as well.
One of them is the Special Weapon Power Shot.
This came as a pleasant surprise, as this new feature was not listed on the official website.
Saiga NAK
Special Weapons acquired from defeating bosses can now be fired in distinct modes.
Series veterans can easily picture this as the Special Weapon charge shots from the Mega Man X series mapped to a single dedicated button.
For example, with a Special Weapon where Mega Man dashes forward, the travel distance differs substantially between the standard version and the Power Shot.
Only one Special Weapon was available in this demo, so we look forward to discovering how other weapons function in the final game!
Next is the largest new feature, which also lends its name to the title: the Override System.
Allowing Mega Man to disengage his limiters and unleash power beyond normal thresholds, this mechanic felt exhilarating.
Saiga NAK
Once activated, offensive capabilities receive a massive boost for a limited time, dramatically increasing attack power and switching the Mega Buster to a three-round burst.
It grants enough firepower to dismantle mid-bosses in the blink of an eye.
Because Mega Man's core handling doesn't change drastically and purely enhances offensive output, it delivers an immensely satisfying rush.
Watching enemy health melt away in seconds feels undeniably great!
It almost made us wish this form could last indefinitely.
However, true to the concept of removing limiters, Mega Man enters a weakened state for a brief period once time expires.
During this downtime, Charge Shots become unavailable and rapid-fire buster shots are disabled, requiring strategic consideration of when to trigger it.
Points of Concern
High Difficulty Level
This might simply come down to personal skill, but the overall difficulty felt remarkably high.
In an era where many games can be easily completed through to the credits, this level of challenge is genuinely refreshing.
Having cleared several past entries including the Mega Man X series, this author let down their guard thinking everything would be fine, only to have the demo time expire before even catching a glimpse of Twinkle Girl herself...
It was deeply frustrating.
Yet the difficulty never feels outright unfair. It falls into the category where you understand the strategy but your execution falls short, meaning repeated attempts are bound to deliver the gratification of overcoming the challenge.
Lack of Readily Apparent Difficulty Options
Past entries offered difficulty selections such as reducing incoming damage, but no such option could be confirmed in this demo build.
While the Custom Chip System may function as practical difficulty tuning, or options might simply remain unimplemented at this demo stage, having clear guidance such as Recommended for Beginners! would have been welcome.
Override System Triggers Automatically in Critical Situations
Saiga NAK
While formidable when active, the Override System automatically triggers when health drops low.
Though likely designed as a safety net to prevent players from fainting without using their Override, having a mechanic with built-in drawbacks activate automatically may bother some players.
For instance, advanced players attempting speedruns might willingly absorb damage to push forward, only to have the system trigger unintentionally. Having an option to toggle this feature on or off would be ideal.
Because thorough testing was limited in this demo, our apologies if this behavior was tied exclusively to a specific Custom Chip.
Overall Demo Impressions!
In summary, the game feels like a fittingly evolved, brand-new Mega Man title.
Given the brief demo time, checking every nuance was impossible, but classic Mega Man identity and fresh innovations blend together remarkably well.
As mentioned earlier, veterans of the franchise as well as newcomers should have no trouble with controls or understanding objectives, so anyone interested should definitely keep an eye out for upcoming announcements.
