Developers announced the collaboration between the game, Apex Legends, and the title, FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH (hereinafter, FF7R), as a surprise during THE GAME AWARDS 2023 in December 2023.
Because developers already teased a Wednesday, January 10, 2024 start date, many players awaited a follow-up; now, they have finally revealed the full details!

Apex Legends x FF7R collaboration starts on January 10!
The developers have released the event trailer for the Apex Legends x FF7R collaboration, revealing the details.
The event runs from Wednesday, January 10, 2024, to Wednesday, January 31, 2024.
Given that the game, Apex Legends, rarely collaborates with other properties, this is shaping up to be one of their largest collaboration events to date.
Limited-time mode FINAL FANTASY VII TAKEOVER
A special mode, FINAL FANTASY VII TAKEOVER, brings the battle royale map into the world of FINAL FANTASY VII!
The Buster Sword R2R5 will now appear alongside standard weapons.
You can switch between light and heavy attacks, and by blocking to reduce incoming damage, you can fill your Limit gauge to unleash a Limit Break!
The Buster Sword R2R5 has a chance to appear throughout the map, and you can also find it in Care Packages.
Be sure to check out its actual performance and handling once the event begins!
Since FINAL FANTASY VII introduced Materia, you can collect it across the battle royale map and equip it to specific weapons. You gain 5 different effect variations—just like in the original game—to gain an advantage in combat:
- Blue Materia (HP Absorb): Deal damage to enemies to heal yourself.
- Green Materia (Lightning): Reloading an empty weapon triggers a Shock Nova, dealing damage to nearby enemies and slowing them down.
- Purple Materia (Critical): Randomly trigger critical hits for extra damage.
- Red Materia (Summon): Summon a Nessie Companion to attack enemies.
- Yellow Materia (Assess): Deal damage to enemies to reveal their remaining health.
Developers release 36 new cosmetic item variations
Apex Legends features a vast number of character skins, weapon skins, and charms.
Naturally, being a major collaboration, developers are introducing a massive number of new cosmetic items!
Fans have reacted strongly on social media to the Moogle-inspired Wattson skin.
You can obtain these from Apex Legends & FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH Event packs.
The developers clearly put significant effort into the weapon skins.
Players can acquire a total of 36 variations of decorative items commemorating this first-ever crossover.
You can also acquire the Mythic melee weapon skin, Buster Sword R5, via event packs!
It will not appear in the Mythic shop after the event concludes, so make sure to get it while the event is live!
Gil & Reward Shop
By playing the event mode and clearing specific challenges, you can earn a special currency called Gil.
You can exchange the Gil you collect for items such as the Cactuar charm and event packs, so be sure to play a little every day and work on gathering Gil!
Store offers select skins
The store will also feature iconic skins for 6 Legends, including Wraith, Horizon, and Crypto.
The skin selection will rotate during the event, so don't forget to check back daily until your desired skin appears!
Stickers arrive in Twitch Drops
You can earn Apex Legends stickers via Twitch Drops by watching specific streams.
Link your EA account with your Twitch account and watch the streams during the specified periods to get your hands on these limited stickers!
