Cygames and Tokyo University of the Arts Begin Joint Research on Game Production and Game AI Development Tools, Aiming to Create New Experiences

News

It was announced that Cygames Research, the research division of Cygames, and Tokyo University of the Arts have begun joint research on game production and game AI development tools.
They will share their respective specialized knowledge and collaborate on the development of new games.

Cygames and Tokyo University of the Arts Begin Joint Research!

It has been revealed that Cygames Research, the research division of Cygames, and Tokyo University of the Arts have started joint research on game production and game AI development tools.
This research is a joint effort focusing on two elements: visual expression for representing the entire virtual space in a game, and game AI for controlling the autonomous behavior of NPCs (Non-Player Characters) within that space.

Cygames will provide specialized knowledge on game production and publishing to students at the Tokyo University of the Arts, and the Tokyo University of the Arts will provide specialized knowledge on visual expression and game AI to Cygames.
They will also jointly develop a live programming environment that utilizes LLM (Large Language Model), a type of generative AI, as a tool for controlling NPCs.

Through this initiative, they aim to deliver original and highly artistic game titles to the world, and in the future, build an environment that makes it easier for artists in the field of arts to engage in game development.

Comment from Takashi Kiriyama, Dean of the Graduate School of Film and New Media, Tokyo University of the Arts

Ahead of the opening of the Game and Interactive Art Department in the Graduate School of Film and New Media in April 2026, the start of this joint research with Cygames is of great significance.
Currently, AI is an indispensable part of art as well.
Particularly in the field of digital art, represented by games, the incorporation of AI has the potential to give the work itself a new level of interactivity.
Generative AI is also having a major impact on the production process.
While it was conventionally difficult for small teams to cover all aspects, generative AI changes production itself, suggesting that a single person or a small number of people can exert great power.
In such a period, what is expressed using advanced information technology, including AI, becomes increasingly important.
Through joint research with Cygames, we aim to develop new expressions by pioneering areas not yet explored in various fields of gaming.

Comment from Shuichi Kurabayashi, Director of Cygames Research

We have started joint research with the Graduate School of Film and New Media at Tokyo University of the Arts regarding game production and game AI development tools.
With the "practice" of work production and publication by students and graduates, and the "research" of game AI/generative AI that supports the creative activities of expressionists as two wheels, we will explore new possibilities for the medium of games.
Cygames Research has previously worked on the development of technology that supports creation through computer science research on game expression and interaction.
The purpose of this joint research is to establish a new research structure for generating technology that assists content production in the age of generative AI, born from the dialogue between art and technology.
Through this initiative, we will promote the research and development of a suite of AI tools that allow creators to freely conceive ideas and enrich the player experience.
As a "company that creates the best content," we will advance the challenge of delivering new experiences to the world together with everyone at Tokyo University of the Arts.
