At the " Tokyo Game Show 2026," held from Thursday, September 17, 2026, to Sunday, September 20, 2026,
I got to try out " Persona 4 Revival," scheduled for release in 2027, at the "Sega / Atlus" booth!
Here’s what I found most compelling about the game’s story and battles based on my hands-on experience.
Trying out "Persona 4 Revival" at "TGS 2026"! I related to the characters as they faced the parts of themselves they wanted to ignore
At the "Tokyo Game Show 2026," I—a first-time player of the Persona series—got to try out " Persona 4 Revival "!
"Persona 4 Revival" is a full remake of "Persona 4 The Golden, " which gained popularity worldwide.
With the theme of " Youth × Occult × Mysterious Incidents," everything has reportedly been reimagined for a modern audience.
I’m so excited to see what kind of story this game has in store!
There were two modes available: one focused on the story and one focused on battles.
I tried out the mode focused on the story!
The demo featured the protagonist, Yu Narukami; his classmate, Yosuke Hanamura; and a mysterious bear.
The story began when the two protagonists found themselves lost in a mysterious place.
This place seems to resemble the shopping district the protagonists know well.
However, with its dim atmosphere, it seems quite different from their usual town.
As they explored, strange creatures called “Shadows” appeared.
One of them—a gigantic one—attacks Yosuke…!
Awakening to Your Other Self: “Persona”
Trying to save Yosuke, the protagonist awakens his Persona, “Izanagi”!
In *Persona 4 Revival*, a “ Persona ” is “ a suit of armor for the soul to face adversity”—in other words, “another self.”
Using that power, he defeats the enemy and succeeds in saving Yosuke.
Confronting Your “Shadow”—Your Other Self
As the story progresses, Yosuke’s “other self” makes an appearance.
“I’m the one who thinks everything’s a pain in the ass,” says the other Yosuke. “You’re just putting on a happy face and acting all cheerful because you’re afraid of being isolated.”
Yosuke is shaken and ends up rejecting his other self...
, the other Yosuke laughs, “Hahaha, come on, I’m me!” and, losing his human form, transforms into a Shadow!
It seems that in this game, you’ll have to face your own inner darkness—the part of yourself you can’t even accept—as an enemy.
Fight in turns! The "P4R" battle system
Battle begins against Yosuke’s other self, “Shadow”!
It’s a turn-based battle where you can use attacks, skills, and defense.
By using the "Geo" skill, you were able to exploit the enemy’s weakness!
By exploiting Shadow’s weakness, you’ve gained another turn to act!
Identifying weaknesses and increasing the number of attacks seems to be the key.
When an enemy looks like it’s about to use a powerful attack, defend.
If the protagonist’s weakness is exploited, the enemy gets two turns, so I’ll fight cautiously...!
In the end, I used the “Geo” skill to finish him off and defeated the other Yosuke!
When he accepts himself, the Shadow becomes a “Persona.”
Yosuke’s other self was a part of himself that he had been unwilling to accept.
By accepting that part of himself, his “Shadow” transformed into a “Persona”!
His other self became “Jiraiya,” Yosuke’s new power—a “personality armor” to face adversity.
In this game, you awaken the inner power known as “Persona” by “facing the part of yourself you’ve been avoiding.”
Through the stories of characters who confront their own inner selves, I felt this game empowers players to face their own hearts and find the strength to overcome pain.
Just as the story was getting really interesting, the demo ended!
It made me eager to play the rest in the full version.
