News

I am sure that everyone has used Internet shopping, flea markets, and auctions at one time or another. Many of you have probably also had the experience of selling your own items. Japan is an island nation, and when you want to sell your prized collections, you must unconsciously think of selling them domestically. However! If you think about it, the world's population is 80 times larger than Japan's, and the demand is also 80 times larger! In addition, items that can only be obtained in Japan become more scarce. eBay Japan K.K. has launched eBay SpeedPAK Economy, a new shipping service on eBay, the world's largest online marketplace, for the Japanese market! This unique service allows you to ship overseas safely and securely from your local Lawson or post office.

I think there are three major hurdles to cross-border EC. First is the cross-cultural hurdle, and second is the language hurdle. These two hurdles have become relatively easy to overcome with the help of digital transformation such as ChatGPT. What remains is logistics. eBay SpeedPAK Economy" is a revolutionary shipping solution that will make it possible to lower the hurdles of logistics. Cross-border e-commerce is finally becoming commonplace. Eventually, the term "cross-border" itself may disappear.

Over the past year, we have been working with the Japanese team to launch the "eBay SpeedPAK Express" service in October 2023. Today, we are proud to announce the launch of "eBay SpeedPAK Economy". SpeedPAK is eBay's largest delivery logistics network, managed by our partner Orange Connex. Since 2018, it has delivered hundreds of millions of packages worldwide. eBay continues to expand SpeedPAK's services in Japan to support the country's rapidly growing cross-border business.

Japanese items are very attractive to people living overseas. However, shipping items overseas inevitably raises questions such as, "How much does it cost? What about troubleshooting? The psychological hurdle tends to be high. This is where eBay's newly launched official logistics service "eBay SpeedPAK Economy" comes in! This service allows you to ship overseas safely, inexpensively, and easily.

The overview of "eBay SpeedPAK Economy" is as follows (information at the time of writing).

  • Available countries: USA (except Alaska and Hawaii)
  • Delivery time: 4-12 business days
  • Tracking: Yes (free of charge)
  • Fees: From 1,141 yen
  • Seller Protection: Seller Account Protection
  • Shipping location: LAWSON (Loppi stores) and Japan Post
  • Service Provider: CPaSS

"eBay SpeedPAK Economy" is a shipping service for sellers who handle lightweight and small-sized goods. In less than three weeks since its launch, approximately 2,560 packages have been shipped, with a 100% arrival rate within 12 business days and a 96% arrival rate within 9 business days, which is an impressive achievement!

At Lawson stores where Loppi is installed, the process is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, making it as easy as shipping within Japan. Free package tracking service is included, as well as account protection in case of trouble.

Since approximately 70% of products sold from Japan through eBay are destined for the U.S., the service is only available in the U.S. (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) at the time of service launch. However! In August 2024, the service will be available to the United Kingdom, and by the end of the third quarter, to Germany, and in the future, to Australia and Canada.

How to use "eBay SpeedPAK Economy

Mr. Takashi Ohori
Saiga NAK

eBay SpeedPAK Economy" utilizes CPaSS, eBay's official shipping tool. CPaSS has been introduced in more than 10 countries, mainly in Asia. The advantage of CPaSS is that both sellers and buyers can do business with confidence by linking order and delivery information with eBay.

Shipping Flow

First, sellers in Japan bring their packages to a post office or a Lawson store where a Loppi is installed. Then, the QR code created by CPaSS is read at the store terminal, and an invoice is attached to the package according to the instructions. The procedure is complete when you check in your luggage!

The packages are consolidated by Japan Post into Orange Connex's warehouse in Japan and shipped together to the U.S. for a low price. The packages are also delivered to buyers in the U.S. via Orange Connex's warehouse. This is the entire eBay SpeedPAK Economy, with prices starting as low as 1,141 yen and arriving in 4 to 12 business days.

To use "eBay SpeedPAK Economy", simply create a CPaSS account, link it to your eBay account, and turn on "eBay SpeedPAK Economy" from the settings screen! You can make your cross-border EC debut right away.

Sellers can also ship directly to Orange Connex's warehouse in Japan. For more details, please refer to the eBay SpeedPAK Japan User Manual 2024 (PDF file ).

Q&A Session

Takashi Ohori

Please tell us about any innovations you made in introducing CPaSS to Japan.

We tried to localize CPaSS so that it would be easy to understand and use as a tool, rather than just translating it directly. We also visited Japanese sellers to get their feedback, and added functions and made improvements in some areas. Since we have just started, we would like to continue to receive feedback from users and improve the functions.

Masayuki Okada

Please give us a summary of the first half of 2024.

We have seen very strong growth, which we believe is largely due to the influx of new sellers as well as existing sellers. In particular, we are seeing a lot of purchases from Japan in the enthusiast category on eBay, which has a strong collectible element. In terms of regions, the U.S. continues to be the strongest market, but our global team has also received requests to list more items in Australia, Canada, and various European regions. Last year, we released eBaymag, a tool that allows sellers to reach out to other regions, and we expect this trend to accelerate in the future. The "eBay SpeedPAK Economy" will increase the number of countries where we can ship, and the trend outside of the U.S. will also change.

Mr. Zhang Kang

Will the presence of SHEIN and Temu affect eBay?

eBay has a large market and a large number of sellers all over the world, and buyers can choose from a wide range of products. The growth in Japan, particularly in auto parts, digital cameras, apparel, and anime-related products, is a perfect example of eBay's strength. In addition, eBay has a worldwide logistics network with a dedicated team, so there is no need to worry about the impact on shipping.

Ryosuke Ichida

Please tell us how you envision the use of "eBay SpeedPAK Economy" and "eBay SpeedPAK Express".

eBay SpeedPAK Express" is so fast that in the past it took only 1.7 days to reach the United States. Many buyers of high-brand watches and bags use Express because they want them quickly. On the other hand, eBay SpeedPAK Economy is characterized by a slightly longer delivery time and lower cost, making it a very effective shipping method for lightweight, low-unit-price collectibles such as trading cards and video games. eBay is also a great way for buyers to sell their goods. Another advantage of eBay is that buyers can choose their own shipping method, which is in line with their needs, such as "I don't care how expensive it is, I just want it as soon as possible.

The dawn of cross-border EC is near..!

Speakers

"eBay SpeedPAK Economy" is a new service that allows you to ship goods overseas in the same process as in Japan. It removes the technical and psychological hurdles of cross-border EC, and by linking with convenience stores, the service can be used 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so I have a feeling that the number of people making their eBay debut as a side business will increase even more. Since it is an official eBay service, buyers also have a sense of security, and it is truly a win-win service.

In particular, many of our readers are game enthusiasts, and retro games lying in closets may turn out to be unexpected treasures from the world's perspective...! How about starting a cross-border EC business with the new service "eBay SpeedPAK Economy," which brings the world closer than ever before? For more details, please see the eBay news release and the"eBay SpeedPAK" special page.
