ASUS's gaming brand, Republic of Gamer(ROG), and XREAL, a developer and seller of AR glasses, have announced their jointly developed gaming AR glasses, ROG XREAL R1.
We attended the ROG XREAL R1 Japan Launch Event, held ahead of the release of these smart glasses that boast industry-first gaming performance.
The World's First Gaming AR Glasses "ROG XREAL R1"
The gaming AR glasses, ROG XREAL R1, were announced on Monday, June 15, 2026.
While they have been previously revealed and exhibited at trade shows like CES and COMPUTEX, they have finally arrived in Japan.
The "ROG XREAL R1" stands as the world's first 240Hz-compatible Micro OLED gaming AR glasses.
We bring you a look at the announcement event along with a hands-on review of the actual device!
XREAL describes 2026 as a "bumper year for products," and they have released or plan to release many items such as the following:
- xbx a01 (unreleased in Japan)
- XREAL 1S
- XREAL One Pro
- Project Aura
Alex Lin, General Manager of the OP Business Group at ASUS JAPAN Co., Ltd., mentioned that he had been thinking about how to meet the demand of users who want to enjoy games on an even larger screen.
Esports shoutcaster Kosuke Hiraiwa (@kouhiraiwa777) tested the "ROG XREAL R1" beforehand with titles across various genres, including Street Fighter 6 and Apex Legends.
Whether you want to stay focused without moving your face in esports titles, or enjoy immersive gameplay on a massive screen in racing games, this "ROG XREAL R1" lets you freely change the screen size.
Here is the actual device you are curious about.
It weighs a mere 91g.
The sides light up, staying true to the ROG style.
For handheld gaming PCs like the ROG Ally, Steam Deck, and Lenovo Legion Go, you can easily output video simply by connecting directly to the "ROG XREAL R1" via USB-C!
On the audio front, Bose collaborated on the sound tuning!
The display utilizes Sony's Micro OLED.
It boasts formidable specifications, featuring a per-eye resolution of 1,920×1,080, a maximum refresh rate of 240Hz, and a response time of 0.01ms.
Furthermore, the Motion-to-Photon Latency, which represents the time from moving your head to the action reflecting on the screen, is extremely fast at 3ms.
This is at a level where you can safely say there is virtually no delay.
The design gives the impression of a small LCD and circuit board mounted inside typical sunglasses.
The comfort is not bad, but it feels like the sunglasses are floating slightly, so if someone who doesn't know about them sees you, they might think, "Aren't those sunglasses a bit strange?"
The "ROG XREAL R1" comes bundled with a dock called the "ROG Control Dock."
This dock serves as a video converter between the video source and the "ROG XREAL R1."
The video input ports consist of two HDMI 2.0 ports and one DisplayPort 1.4 port.
The price you are curious about is 141,550 yen (tax included) with a 1-year warranty at the XREAL Official Shop, Official Amazon, and the ASUS Official Online Store!
At ASUS ROG authorized retailers, it is 160,360 yen (tax included) with a 2-year warranty!
Furthermore, as a preorder bonus, the first 300 people will receive the XREAL Eye and ROG Keris II Ace as gifts. Additionally, they can purchase any series of CAGUUU's AXISU chairs at 10% off.
These bonuses are so incredibly valuable that they are bound to sell out!
We actually tried playing some games, and we were able to enjoy a comfortable gaming experience with almost no perceptible latency.
When combined with the ROG Ally, you can enjoy the latest games on a massive screen even on airplanes or bullet trains, giving us a real sense that the ways to enjoy gaming have expanded even further at this point.
The feature that lets you turn off the screen with a single button was also low-key convenient.
With VR devices and the like, checking smartphone notifications or drinking beverages can be quite a hassle...
There are plenty of other intriguing features, such as a 3D mode that can convert 2D video into 3D for output!
Please check the "ROG XREAL R1" product page for details regarding specifications.
The product is scheduled for sequential release starting Tuesday, July 14, 2026.
