[TGS 2026] Hands-on with SEGA’s “STRANGER THAN HEAVEN.” The innovative battle system—which really feels like you’re in a fight—is addictive.

Review

" STRANGER THAN HEAVEN," a brand-new title from "RGG Studio," known for the "Yakuza" series
Ahead of its release on Friday, January 15, 2027, a playable demo was set up at the " Tokyo Game Show 2026 (TGS2026)," so I went to check it out right away.

A thrilling fighting game unlike any other

The protagonist, Shin Daito
Saiga NAK

Here are my honest impressions after trying out the game.

The “thrilling brawls”—something I’ve never experienced in any other action game—were absolutely the best.

It sounds brutal when put into words, but that’s the only way to describe it.
If you’re a fan of battle manga featuring fistfights, you’ll definitely want to check this out when it’s released.
It’s also a game that fans of hard-hitting action can look forward to.

An incredibly realistic city and satisfying combat

Title screen featuring five eras
Saiga NAK

Set across five eras and five stages, this game tells the 50-year story of the protagonist, Shin Daito, and his companions.
During this hands-on demo, we were able to play in the following three areas.

1915: Kokura, Fukuoka (Beginner Battle)

Saiga NAK

1929: Kure, Hiroshima (Intermediate Battle)

Saiga NAK

1943: Osaka, Minami (Advanced Battle)

Saiga NAK

Saiga NAK

When you start the game, a cutscene plays showing Daito getting off the train and heading straight into the streets of Kokura.

The bustling streets of Kokura
Saiga NAK

Controls kick in seamlessly from the cutscene, and before I knew it, I was surrounded by a crowd of passersby.
The scenery and the flow of people felt just like a real city; even though the era is different, it brought back memories of my childhood when I first stepped outside Tokyo Station.

I walked sideways
and
accidentally bumped into
someone
Saiga NAK

If you accidentally bump into a pedestrian, they’ll recoil and exclaim, “Ouch!”—everything in the city moves so realistically.
It makes you wonder, “Is this really just a game?”

The destination marker that looks like the sun
Saiga NAK

I was so captivated by the scenery that I almost forgot my goal, so I pulled myself together.
I decided to head toward the destination shown on the map in the upper right corner.

Saiga NAK

Then, some thugs start giving me a hard time.
Here, too, the game transitions seamlessly into combat.

An innovative battle system where you fight with both hands

Saiga NAK

The combat system in this game is truly innovative.
Its most distinctive feature is that the right and left hands are controlled separately.

Melee attacks seemed particularly effective at breaking the opponent’s guard, which proved very useful
.
Saiga NAK

For example, even if Daito is holding a hammer in his right hand, pressing the button for his left hand allows him to attack with his bare hands.
By combining these left and right actions, you end up fighting just like in real martial arts or a street fight.

Saiga NAK

Since attack range and speed vary completely depending on the weapon, it’s important to choose the right one for each situation.

There’s even an effect where sparks fly when blades clash
Saiga NAK

And guarding is crucial.
If you don’t guard in time with your opponent’s attacks, you’ll take damage.

Saiga NAK

There’s also a dodge action, but you’ll take damage unless you move far enough outside the opponent’s attack range.
The basic strategy is to focus on blocking, while using dodges only for unblockable powerful moves—knowing when to switch between the two is key.

Saiga NAK

However, if you block effectively, you’ll create an opening for your opponent.
Rather than just attacking relentlessly, observe your opponent closely and move appropriately.
That’s the combat style of this game.
The moment I realized this, the game suddenly became a lot more fun.

A dull “thud!” echoes through the
air
Saiga NAK

The sound of a fist striking flesh, the sound of a blade slicing through it.
The sound effects are so vivid that it really feels like you’re in a fight.

Believe it or not, residents had come to watch
Saiga NAK

What’s more, during the fight, my opponent taunts me with lines like, “Don’t you like getting hurt?” and passersby around me cheer me on like they’re watching a martial arts match, shouting, “Take him down!”
There was an indescribable sense of exhilaration in holding back my rising anger while systematically beating my opponent to a pulp.
It was like stepping into the world of a hardcore battle manga.

Points of Concern

At first, I couldn’t gauge the distance properly and missed a lot of hits
Saiga NAK

Of course, this game isn’t for everyone.
Daito’s movements are generally slow and heavy, and since there’s no “lock-on” feature, there were times when I lost track of my opponent and struggled.
It probably won’t suit players who want to mow down enemies spectacularly by just spamming buttons.

However, if you consider this an element designed to create the feeling of “actually being in a fight,” it makes sense.
It should really resonate with those who get hooked on it.

The Meticulous World-Building That Might Seem Like a Side Quest

The interiors of buildings are also extremely realistic

During this hands-on demo, I wasn’t able to experience the character dialogue scenes shown in the promotional video.
Even so, I could definitely get a sense of the rich world-building through side quests and interactions at the shops.

Hey, you! Wanna arm-wrestle?

For example, there was a place in Ogura where you could arm-wrestle.
I heard you get a cash prize if you win, so I decided to give it a try right away.

Saiga NAK

The controls are simple: just tap the buttons displayed on the screen repeatedly.
What’s striking is that there’s absolutely no background music during the arm-wrestling matches.
All you hear are the spectators’ jeers and the sound of clothes rubbing together—it captures the exact atmosphere of the arm-wrestling matches I used to have as a kid.

Saiga NAK

I tapped frantically and somehow managed to win.
Even the subtle movements—like my opponent holding his injured arm—felt just like the real thing.

Saiga NAK

You could even order beef bowls at the food stalls.

Saiga NAK

The way he devoured it looked delicious and was so dynamic—it was a joy to watch.
Eating restores your stamina, so it’s a welcome feature from a gameplay perspective as well.

Recreating “those days” with a unique control scheme

STRANGER THAN HEAVEN Now Available for Pre-order
Saiga NAK

Even though it’s supposed to be a game, the demo offered a strange experience—as if I’d wandered into some other town in the real world.
Everything—from the cityscape to the way people behave—feels incredibly realistic.

And the combat is innovative and unique.
It wasn’t just the controller’s vibration—there was a definite “heaviness” to it, as if we were actually exchanging blows.
I can’t wait for the release date.

Nationwide Demo Event Information

Starting Sunday, October 11, 2026, nationwide demo events will be held featuring the same gameplay as this preview.
If you’re interested, I highly recommend experiencing that “heaviness” for yourself.
