Wi-Fi 6 support! Asus "ROG Rapture GT-AX11000" review of Wi-Fi router with VPN server function required for telework!

Review

The " ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 " gaming Wi-Fi router was released by ASUS in May 2019
We have a ROG Rapture GT-AC5300 in our office at Saiga NAK, and we were curious about this new model since it was released after the ROG Rapture GT-AC5300 was introduced.
In this article, we will review the GT-AX11000.

Let's start with the looks! Routers are now shining too!

Let's start with looks. These days, even Wi-Fi routers have to look good.
The GT-AX11000 looks almost identical to the GT-AC5300 we are currently using. The size is also the same.
The fact that the size remains the same is convenient because there is no need to rebuild the place when replacing it.

Can you see the difference in antenna design?
The GT-AC5300 is solidly made, while the GT-AX11000 has holes that look airy. It looks cool in an organic way.
This large antenna provides signal strength. It covers an area of three floors in a detached house or four bedrooms in an apartment.

Also, the color of the logo in the center of the unit has changed.
The GT-AC5300 is colored red, but the GT-AX11000 is colorless. Hmm? you may think, but this is actually the area that features the Aura RGB glow.
This is the first ROG-brand Wi-Fi router to feature Aura RGB.
There are a total of five lighting patterns: constant lighting, random color, flashing, flowing flashing, and blinking.
By matching it with the atmosphere of the room and other devices, it can be used as an "attractive Wi-Fi router.

The logo glows brightly. Lighting is also important when it comes to gaming devices.

The device does not have a function to approach you in response to your voice saying "Come here.

Of course the GT-AX11000 walks because of its shape. It does not walk.
It is trying to protect GT-AC2900, or it is emitting red light to threaten it. It does not threaten.
Today's Wi-Fi routers can even be activated autonomously. It's not possible...but with ASUS' technology, maybe...?

It's cute, isn't it? It seems to be happy when you pet it. I hope they are happy.

What about the performance I'm curious about... comparing the GT-AX11000 and the GT-AC5300!

Next, we will compare the performance of the GT-AX11000 with that of the GT-AC5300 currently used in our office. We will measure the Wi-Fi communication speed in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.
Both the GT-AX11000 and GT-AC5300 have VPN server functionality with PPTP and IPsec.
We also measured the speed when setting up a VPN on each and connecting via IPsec from another Wi-Fi line.

(Apology: At the time of publication, the VPN server function was described as L2TP, not IPsec.)

ROG Rapture-AC5300ROG Rapture-AX11000
Wi-Fi communication speed (2.4GHz band) 46 Mbps (downlink) / 66 Mbps (uplink) 81 Mbps (downlink) / 74 Mbps (uplink)
Wi-Fi transmission speed (5GHz band) 460 Mbps (downlink) / 380 Mbps (uplink) 520 Mbps (downlink) / 400 Mbps (uplink)
VPN connection Communication speed (2.4GHz band) 69 Mbps (downlink) / 54 Mbps (uplink) 60 Mbps (downlink) / 66 Mbps (uplink)
VPN connection Communication speed (5GHz band) 390 Mbps (downlink) / 210 Mbps (uplink) 380 Mbps (downlink) / 190 Mbps (uplink)

While there are some influences such as the source line and time of day, we can see that both units are producing high figures.

The GT-AX11000 was slightly slower when connected to a VPN, but there was no difference in the experience between the two.
The GT-AC5300 has a total transmission speed of approximately 5.3 Gbps, while the GT-AX11000 has a speed of 11 Gbps, almost double that of the GT-AC5300.
Also, the recommended number of devices that can be connected simultaneously is 24 for the GT-AC5300 and 36 for the GT-AX11000, a difference of 1.5 times.

Communication speed with Wi-Fi 6

One major difference between the GT-AX11000 and the GT-AC5300 is that the GT-AX11000 supports Wi-Fi 6.
The current mainstream is Wi-Fi 5, which was established in 2014, but Wi-Fi 6 is a next-generation wireless LAN standard that was just established in 2019.
Compared to "Wi-Fi 5," which was only available in the 5 GHz band, "Wi-Fi 6" is available in both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands, and boasts a high-spec maximum transmission speed of 9.6 Gbps.
This reduces signal congestion and ensures smooth communication. It also reduces the battery consumption of the terminal.
This will surely make daily life and online gaming, which can be affected by communication speeds, more comfortable than ever before.

Let's compare the speeds of Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6.

Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6 Speed Comparison
GT-AX11000 Wi-Fi 5 400 Mbps (downlink) / 670 Mbps (uplink)
GT-AX11000 Wi-Fi 6 480 Mbps downlink / 640 Mbps uplink

The downlink speeds are 400 Mbps for Wi-Fi 5 and 480 Mbps for Wi-Fi 6, with Wi-Fi 6 being 20% faster.

Can the signal reach a distance away from the router?

The large antenna is the same as the GT-AC5300, but can Wi-Fi 6 cover the same wide area?
Let's use his usual to check if there is a good signal at the Saiga NAK editorial office's Sumikko.

He is appealing that he is receiving it while growing out of the wall. Can you find it?

Did you guys find it?

He looks like he might be getting another signal, but even in the corner of the office he seems to be catching Wi-Fi 6 well.

I recommend using it in the office as well as for gaming.

The ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 is marketed as a gaming Wi-Fi router, but we found it to be perfect for office use as well.
By setting up a next-generation network environment that supports Wi-Fi 6, you may be able to perform your work more quickly!
If you are considering reviewing your future network environment to promote telework, why not consider installing this system?
