The results for the 50th "Famicom National Poll," What Comes to Mind When You Think of "Sea/Ship"? have been announced, and the top 20 titles have been revealed on the Famicom 40th Anniversary Campaign Site!
With Marine Day on Monday, July 15, 2024, which is a national holiday, approaching—and above all, Summer means the sea! And the sea means ships!—this is a perfect theme for the season!
The sea or ships appear in or are the setting for games of various genres: in RPGs, the ship serves as a means of transportation on the sea; action games have stages set on the sea or a ship; and some shooting games have the player's ship as the main craft. The range is quite extensive.
Among these, the title that shone in first place was "Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line" with a 16% share of the vote! Second place went to "Higemaru Makaijima - Nanatsu no Shima Daibōken" also with a 16% share of the vote!
Given the same vote share, but not a tie for first place, "Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line" must have won by a slightly greater number of votes.
Although ships are a familiar means of transportation on the sea in RPGs, they first appeared in the "Dragon Quest" series in "Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line."
Since acquiring the ship immediately expands the range of movement and gives the impression that the real adventure is starting, it likely remains a strong memory for many people.
Considering that all numbered "Dragon Quest" titles released on the Famicom, except for the original "Dragon Quest" where the ship does not appear, are ranked—including "Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation" in 4th place and "Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen" in 13th place, which this author also voted for—we can feel the strength of the "Dragon Quest" series.
"Higemaru Makaijima - Nanatsu no Shima Daibōken," in 2nd place, is an action-adventure game set on pirate ships and islands, so the setting itself is central to this game.
"Uncharted Waters," in 3rd place, is a simulation, and "Murder on the Mississippi," in 5th place, is a mystery adventure, showing that a wide range of genres were ranked when the theme was "Sea/Ship."
