If "Automatic software update" is set to ON, the software update data will be automatically downloaded if you are connected to the Internet, and you will receive a confirmation when you start the software.
To update manually, place the cursor on the "Animal Crossing" icon in the HOME menu, press the + button, and select "Update Software" -> "Update via Internet". You can also update the software with someone who has already updated to version 1.2.1 by going to "Update Software" -> "Update to the version of other people nearby".
You must have the same version in order to play together via local communication, so be sure to update your software!
If the version number in the upper right corner of the title screen reads "Ver. 1.2.1", you have already updated!
