Dropping a 1-Ton Steel Beam for Game Audio!? Tech Demo Released for SKYSQUARE, an Outdoor-Specialized Studio for Recording Authentic Sounds
News

AZSTOKE, a company specializing in game sound development, has released GRAVITY, a tech demo composed of audio recorded at SKYSQUARE, an outdoor-specialized field studio operated by the company. An exhibition at CEDEC2026 has also been confirmed.

SKYSQUARE Tech Demo Released! Powerful and Realistic Audio Source

In the newly released GRAVITY, the team recorded every sound at SKYSQUARE. The video depicts the official character, "Loopdirock," making their way through various metallic materials as massive steel beams plummet from the rainy sky.

The team pursued fine nuances that only real-world recording can capture, such as the overwhelming sense of scale of the objects, the sonic variations that differ with every impact, and the raw, scraping grittiness of metal against metal. Through meticulous acoustic adjustments, they crafted a soundscape that delivers an immersive experience, making listeners feel as though they are actually there.

"1-Ton Steel Beams" and Heavy Machinery! An Unprecedented Recording Method

For the recording, the team purchased multiple massive steel beams weighing close to a total of 1 ton, setting up an on-site recording environment. Using a Yanmar excavator, they hoisted the steel beams high into the air and let them free-fall—a bold method that goes far beyond conventional studio work.

This "life-risking realism" required large-scale heavy machinery, rigorous safety measures, and exceptional recording techniques. The vast acoustic space of SKYSQUARE made this project possible.

Recording "Earth-Rumbling" Acoustics Utilizing Large Woofers and Power Amps

They conducted a unique recording of "earth-rumbling" acoustics by combining a CLASSIC PRO CPW18II-4 woofer unit with a YAMAHA PC4002 power amplifier. Experienced staff built the entire audio infrastructure from scratch, capturing vibrations with microphones to reproduce highly challenging earth-rumbling sounds.

To achieve a grand sense of scale, they utilized massive 18-inch speakers. They prevented thinness or distortion caused by power shortages and successfully reproduced a realistic ground rumble where the air itself vibrates.

Ambushing the Weather: Recording Ambient Sounds of Adverse Weather (Rain and Thunder)

The realistic sounds of rain and thunder in GRAVITY are captured from actual natural phenomena. Staff waited on-site until the ideal adverse weather arrived, capturing the raw atmospheric swells and dynamic shifts in weather unique to that specific day and location.
