Sony has introduced its flagship model for 2026, the Xperia 1 VIII. The Xperia 1 VIII will be available in Hong Kong from May 21, 2026 (Thursday), and in Japan on June 11, 2026 (Thursday). The Xperia 1 VIII not only changes the body design of the previous seven generations, but also enhances the camera performance. The photo shows the Hong Kong model, but the Japanese model is almost the same except for the addition of FeliCa.
Xperia 1 VIII" with a significantly changed appearance

Xperia 1 VIII has undergone a major review of the overall shape of the back and the configuration around the camera. In the past, the camera was designed to be less noticeable by arranging the lenses in a single vertical line, but in this product, the triple-lens camera is laid out in an L-shape in a nearly square base. The design has been changed to draw the eye to the top of the back of the product.
This layout change is not merely a visual innovation, but a necessity in order to accommodate the telephoto sensor, which is much larger than in the previous generation. The camera unit itself has increased in thickness and area, which I feel emphasizes its photographic equipment-like appearance.

The back and frame surfaces have a new texture reminiscent of "rough stone. This is called " ORE TEXTURE," and it is characterized by a matte finish that looks like it has been carved out of a rock surface and a sense of depth that changes its appearance depending on the way the light hits it.
While providing practicality that prevents fingerprints from showing up and prevents slipping, colors such as graphite black and garnet red have also been combined into calm colors centered on dark tones. The new design has an atmosphere that makes it more like a professional tool than ever before.
Display that is easy to see even outdoors

The display size is the same as the previous model, a 6.5-inch OLED panel with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and a variable refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. Peak brightness has been increased by a factor of 1.5 to improve outdoor viewing.
The dual front + back illuminance sensors and BRAVIA-derived automatic brightness control continue to be included to meticulously optimize brightness and contrast in response to changes in ambient light. The front camera is positioned outside the display and can be displayed in full screen mode, another feature of the Xperia series.
Three 48-megapixel cameras

The 48-megapixel wide-angle camera, the 48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, and the 48-megapixel telephoto camera, which was 12 megapixels in the previous model, can all be used to take high quality photos. The front camera has 12 megapixels.

In addition to the volume and power buttons, a shutter release button is also mounted on the side of the main body. The ease of pressing the button has improved with each successive model, and the Xperia 1 VIII also has a less wobbly button than the previous model, allowing the camera to be activated and the shutter to be released with a softer press. The ease of use of the shutter release button is important when using it as a camera phone, and this is something that only Sony, which also offers the α series cameras, could have achieved.
Music playback functionality similar to that of a Walkman

The 3.5mm headphone jack on the top of the device is also a feature of the Xperia series. While many high-end models from other manufacturers have eliminated the jack, Sony has consistently included it. The ability to freely choose high-performance wired headphones is a privilege unique to Xperia.
The UI and information display on the music application side has also been brushed up in detail, including Sony's unique high sound quality features such as 360 Reality Audio, DSEE Ultimate, and 360 Upmix, and enhanced high-resolution sound source format display and recommendation settings. The world of the Walkman music player has been incorporated into the smartphone.
Body Finish that Highlights Ease of Use

The new body is highly non-slip, so there is no sense of uneasiness even when used without a case. However, the roughness is a little stronger than that of other smartphones, so it is recommended to use it with a case, which will be introduced later. The matte body has a high quality feel, and the finish is typical of smartphones priced in excess of 200,000 yen.
Camera with improved telephoto performance

The previous model's telephoto camera was 12 megapixels and featured a unique mechanism with variable 85 mm and 170 mm focal lengths. While it could cover two focal lengths with one camera, the f-stop was slightly darker at f/3.5 on the maximum telephoto side.
The Xperia 1 VIII has a single 70mm camera, but the pixel count has increased to 48 megapixels, and it also uses an f/2.8 lens. This allows for more beautiful shots even at 5.8x digital (approx. 140mm) in the standard UI of the camera app.

The newly equipped " AI Camera Assistant " reads the subject, brightness, weather, and other conditions when you point the camera at it, and suggests the best color tone, bokeh intensity, lens selection, and other parameters for the scene. There is no need to set up detailed parameters yourself; simply select from multiple images to create a professional-looking shot. Not only the performance of the camera, but also the usage itself has been greatly improved.

The camera supports 4K 120fps video. Sharp pictures can be saved even when still images are cut from movies.
Enjoy telephoto shooting on a daily basis

I actually took a picture with the Xperia 1 VIII. While smartphone cameras from other manufacturers have much stronger AI correction, the Xperia 1 VIII produces almost true-to-life colors of actual scenery. The result is an image that looks more like it was taken with a mirrorless camera than with a smartphone.

This is a long-distance shot taken at 5.8x (140mm). The fine details of the ferry on the surface of the sea are well represented. It is felt that the camera can be used regularly enough for shooting at this magnification.
Ease of use that makes you feel like you are using the camera

While the previous model had manual focus for macro photography, the Xperia 1 VIII can shoot with a 140mm auto focus. The minimum focusing distance is 15cm, so you can get quite close to the subject.

Bokeh photography also has a natural finish in the way the background is removed. Anyway, using the Xperia 1 VIII, I felt that I could enjoy taking photos and videos as if I were using a camera instead of a smartphone.
Newly designed case, reborn Xperia series

The case is now made of transparent material, which is also a big change from the previous product. Pricing starts at 235,400 yen for the SIM-free model in Japan and 12,099 HKD in Hong Kong. The Xperia 1 VIII, with its sharp telephoto camera, easy-to-use AI assist, and Walkman-like sound, is the flagship smartphone that Sony fans have been waiting for, and it's fun to shoot, listen to, and touch.
