On Thursday, September 17, 2026, the Nintendo Switch 2 version of fighting game, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising (hereinafter GBVSR), officially launches!
Concurrently, an update across the existing PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Steam versions will add new playable fighter, Id, to the roster.
With that, we bring you our comprehensive hands-on preview report of the Nintendo Switch 2 version and Id!
Note: This article is based on information released in japan. Some in-game terms in this article are unofficially translated.
Dark Blade Shattered: Id Arrives in GBVSR!

Id, a central character in the storyline of GRANBLUE FANTASY: Relink (hereinafter GBF: Relink), joins the battle in GBVSR.
Many fans were likely surprised to see Id join the fighting game roster ahead of his debut in the original mobile browser game, Granblue Fantasy.
Ever since the initial announcement in June 2026, we have been eagerly anticipating this day...!

In GBF: Relink's storyline, Id stood as an enigmatic swordsman blocking the protagonist's path.
Without spoiling the narrative for those yet to play GBF: Relink, the pre-match dialogues—a signature highlight of GBVSR—feature delightful nods that will make GBF: Relink veterans grin.
There are even unique banter interactions with characters who never appeared in GBF: Relink, such as Ladiva.
By the way, as of writing this article, the author's Granblue credentials stand as follows:
- GBVSR playtime: 1,896 hours.
- GBF: Relink playtime: 969 hours.
- Original Granblue Fantasy (hereinafter GBF): veteran Crew Captain experience.
Suffice to say, gaming pedigree aside, my passion and love for the Granblue universe are second to none.
Leave this preview in good hands!
Please keep in mind that this preview is based on a pre-release build, and elements may differ from the final retail version.
Implemented in Figure Studio Mode as Well!

Cygames is also adding Id-related 3D models to Figure Studio Mode.
Examining Id's detailed model, rendered with textures distinct from GBF: Relink, is a joy in itself!
This mode alone can swallow hours of any fan's time, so alongside the aforementioned character banter, we encourage both GBF and GBF: Relink players who haven't picked up GBVSR yet to give it a try.

On a quirky note, the model of the quest request sheet that Id pulls out post-match is also available.
This will surely put the creativity of Figure Studio enthusiasts to the test...!
Id in GBVSR is an All-Rounder! Highly Recommended for Beginners!

Now, moving onto what everyone has been waiting for: Id's combat performance and handling.
In short, he is an accessible all-round fighter that delivers pure exhilaration and feels fantastic to pilot.

His in-game ease-of-use rating is 4 stars.
While not quite at the 5-star simplicity of Gran or Djeeta, he is well within comfortable reach for fighting game newcomers.
If the Nintendo Switch 2 launch and Id's arrival have piqued your interest in GBVSR, don't hesitate to pick him up.
Throughout the remainder of this report, button notations will appear frequently, standardized as follows:
- Light Attack: L
- Medium Attack: M
- Heavy Attack: H
- Unique Action: U
- Skill: Ab
- Guard: G
- Throw: Th
Normals Are Intuitive and Highly Accessible!

In fighting games, characters with install transformations often feature understated base kits early in matches, but with Id, there is no need to worry.
His normal attacks are straightforward, reliable, and versatile.

Swings using his massive greatsword, Ragnarok, have great reach while remaining mechanically simple.
During our hands-on time, his startup frames felt very reasonable without excessive sluggishness.

One move that left a strong personal impression was crouching H.
While many characters feature crouching H normals that hit high directly overhead as dedicated anti-airs, Id's motion reaches slightly more forward.
For anti-air duties, players will likely alternate between this normal and his Atonement skill detailed below.
Additionally, Id's basic movement and dash properties are as follows:
- Dashing and jumping mechanics match standard cast speeds and distances
- Dash Light (L) attack functions similarly to standard universal dash attacks
- Dash Medium (M) hits low, just like Gran's
- Dash Heavy (H) is a wide, heavy swing ideal for guaranteed punishes
- Close-range normals have few atypical properties like multi-hits
All in all, base Id solidly covers all the hallmarks of a standard GBVSR character.
Speaking of Dash Light attacks, an Id design for the Dash Light Attack T-shirt has been officially confirmed!
The design will debut starting Thursday, September 17, 2026.
Skills Feature Plentiful Followups!
In his base form, Id shines with a diverse toolkit of skills, including several with unique properties.
Reginleiv

- Simple Input: Ab
- Technical Input: 236 + Attack
A familiar move shared with Gran and Djeeta.
Similar to Gran's Medium version, Id's Reginleiv is a two-part attack featuring a physical strike followed by a projectile.
The projectile velocity is brisk.

The physical strike portion can clash and negate incoming enemy projectiles before firing his own.
The Medium (M) version is particularly distinctive.
Its physical strike has slower startup, advancing forward roughly two character widths while attacking.
This delayed startup is actually a massive strength, making it ideal as a frame trap to fish for counter-hits.

The Ultimate (U) version removes the physical strike, becoming a pure, high-speed projectile.

However, when landing at point-blank range, it automatically transitions into Diagodd detailed below.
A move this effective at both full screen and point-blank is terrifying...!
Reginleiv Recidive

- Simple Input: Hold Ab
- Technical Input: Hold 236 + Attack
Charging Reginleiv creates a larger, slower-moving projectile, similar to Djeeta's charged projectile.
There is no apparent range limit, reliably traveling full screen.
By advancing behind the slow-moving projectile, players can mix this up with standard Reginleiv for potent neutral pressure.
Diagodd
- Automatically triggers on counter-hit with Reginleiv's initial strike
Id-Exclusive Mechanic #1.
When Reginleiv's melee strike lands as a close-range counter-hit, it automatically transitions into a specialized followup.
After Diagodd hits, the opponent is left standing in hitstun right in front of you, ripe for full combo extension.
Thanks to this property, opponents must respect Id's frame traps far more than usual.
Atonement

- Simple Input: 6 + Ab
- Technical Input: 623 + Attack
A strike that discharges a shockwave into the ground.
While visually reminiscent of Soriz's Rock Smash, its utility is completely different.
The Light (L) version has rapid startup and causes a knockdown, making it a great combo ender.
The Medium (M) and Heavy (H) versions have full invincibility, serving as premier reversals and anti-airs.
You will want to alternate between this and crouching H for air defense.

The Ultimate (U) version adds an extra strike for increased damage.
In GBF: Relink, this skill absorbed incoming attacks aimed at allies before retaliating as a counter.
Its invincible reversal properties in GBVSR faithfully capture that flavor.
Never Enough

- Simple Input: 4 + Ab
- Technical Input: 214 + Attack
A forward-lunging strike.
On hit or block, it can branch into two followup variations detailed below.
The M and H versions—especially M—cover massive ground, traveling nearly the full length of the screen.
Use it to cancel from poke normals, execute long-range surprise approaches, or close distance.
I will probably be buffering Never Enough constantly in real matches.

The U version removes followups, becoming a streamlined, powerful lunging strike.
In GBF: Relink, this skill restored health on hit; noticing these differences between GBF: Relink and GBVSR adds another layer of fun.
Followup Attack

- Simple Input: 4 + Ab during Never Enough
- Technical Input: 214 + Attack during Never Enough
Delivers a spinning sobat kick as a followup to Never Enough.
The animation is identical to GBF: Relink, which is stunning to see.
With fast startup and solid damage, it serves as an ideal combo finisher.
Whenever Never Enough lands, confirm into the sobat kick.
However, on crouching hits or counter-hits, switching to the launcher followup below is recommended.
Launcher Attack

- Simple Input: 2 + Ab during Never Enough
- Technical Input: 623 + Attack during Never Enough
Id-Exclusive Mechanic #2.
Compared to the sobat followup, this has slower startup and combos only when the preceding Never Enough connects on a crouching or counter-hit opponent.

On hit, Id automatically leaps into the air to pursue the launched opponent.
While airborne, you can chain up to three jumping attacks or transition into an air throw.
Chain jumping attacks smoothly in an L -> M -> H sequence.
This was the mysterious launcher teased in promotional trailers!
While conditional, pulling off true air juggles is a rare treat in GBVSR.
Combined with Diagodd, Id has the potential to dish out terrifying mid-screen damage once combo routes are optimized...!?
Scourge

- Simple Input: 2 + Ab
- Technical Input: 22 + Attack
A wide, sweeping greatsword strike.
Many GBF: Relink players probably swung this move constantly when controlling Id.

The M and H versions are remarkable: boasting a reach of 4 to 5 character widths, they hit low!
Catch opponents walking backward or trying to evade Reginleiv by sweeping their feet.
Watch your toes...!
The H version allows followups on point-blank or corner hits.
Chaining crouching L into close L, Triple Attack, H Scourge, close M will become a familiar corner combo route for veteran GBVSR players.

The U version extends range even further and wall-bounces the opponent on hit, enabling mid-screen conversions.
Opponents who let their guard down at mid-range will pay dearly...!
Dead Weight (Costs 100% SBA Gauge)
- Simple Input: Th + Ab simultaneously
- Technical Input: 236236 + H / 236 + Ab
Id's first Skybound Art (SBA).
An invincible strike standard to most characters' supers.
On a close hit, Id temporarily transforms into his Dragonform to deliver a devastating cinematic strike.
The close-up cut-in of Id is undeniably cool...!

You can also activate this super while in Dragonform.
While activating it ends Dragonform, it guarantees the cinematic followup even from distance.
And there it is: Dragonform.
While the Dragonform transformation in this move is purely cinematic, Id's true brilliance begins right here.
Godly Might Unbound (Costs 100% SBA Gauge / Usable at 30% HP or below)
- Simple Input: Th + Ab + U simultaneously
- Technical Input: 236236 + U / 236 + Ab + U simultaneously
Id's Super Skybound Art (SSBA).
Another invincible strike standard to high-tier supers.
On close contact, it unleashes the dynamic flurry attack familiar from GBF: Relink.
GBVSR's cinematic supers are always brimming with passion, and this one is a visual spectacle.

Like his standard SBA, players can perform this while in Dragonform, ending the transformation but guaranteeing the cinematic followup from range.
In GBF: Relink, Godly Might was an ascended state above Dragonform; making it his SSBA in GBVSR feels completely fitting.
Its devastating damage output justifies its status as an SSBA.

As with all GBVSR characters, finishing a match with an SSBA triggers a unique cinematic victory outro, and Id is no exception.
The Alternative Gauge Returns in GBVSR!
In GBF: Relink, Id built his Alternative Gauge using specific skills to unlock his true power in Dragonform, and this core identity remains intact in GBVSR.
Unleashing the power of the dragon requires some setup.
Soul Link

- Input: U
A move used to build the Alternative Gauge located below the SBA gauge.
We explain details on the gauge below.

While holding the U button, Id absorbs incoming attacks similar to Soriz's Muscle Fury.
It appears capable of withstanding any attack other than throws and supers.
Furthermore, releasing Soul Link emits an aura that possesses an active hitbox, allowing you to counter incoming attacks or end combos.
It proved remarkably dependable during our preview matches, making it a staple tool to build Alternative Gauge whenever opportunities arise.
Alternative Gauge

Id-Exclusive Mechanic #3.
Located beneath the SBA gauge, this meter functions as a timer once Id enters Dragonform via Ragnarok Form.
While it fills gradually over time or by expending SBA meter, its primary charge method is using Soul Link.
How quickly you can fill this gauge—or how effectively you can dominate without it—will be the key to victory with Id.
Ragnarok Form (Costs 100% SBA Gauge)

- Simple Input: 4 + Th + Ab simultaneously
- Technical Input: 214214 + H / 214 + Ab
Awaken, dragon's power sleeping within me!
Id-Exclusive Mechanic #4, and undeniably Id's most thrilling feature.
Upon activation, Id's gameplay properties change completely as follows:
- Dash changes to match Versusia's, starting slow and accelerating rapidly
- Cannot jump
- Permanent super armor throughout Dragonform
- Access to exclusive Dragonform skills
Id maintains this form until the Alternative Gauge depletes.
The gauge decreases over time, when executing exclusive skills, or upon taking damage.
Once empty, Id reverts to his normal state.
In terms of overall mechanics, veteran players might find it comparable to Lowain's Super Ultimate Showdown.
Whether popping it with a full gauge to wreak havoc in neutral or canceling into it mid-combo for massive damage, its applications are vast.
Cleaver

- Input: L during Ragnarok Form
Slashes forward continuously.
As long as the attack connects with the opponent, it can be mashed repeatedly just like in GBF: Relink to shred through the enemy's defenses!
Reginleiv Barrage

- Input: M during Ragnarok Form
Fires two projectiles forward.
Can be spammed even on whiff.
Just like GBF: Relink, rapid button presses unleash continuous fire.
With even faster firing speed than GBF: Relink, it provides fantastic chip-damage closing power when the opponent's health is low.
Alter Break

- Input: H during Ragnarok Form
A devastating uppercut that launches the opponent.
While slow, a successful hit allows full juggle followups.
Even if blocked, close spacing creates an immediate setup for Unbound Slam.
What particularly intrigues me is whether specific combo routes allow canceling into Ragnarok Form mid-combo and linking directly into Alter Break.
If possible, the damage output would be astronomical, though our preview session didn't allow for exhaustive testing.
I look forward to experimenting once the update goes live!
Savage Claw
- Input: U during Ragnarok Form
Leaps forward to assault from the air.
Holding forward or back adjusts travel distance: 6 + U reaches far, while 4 + U hits point-blank.
Since Id cannot jump in Dragonform, this serves as an essential tool to bypass projectiles.
Like Alter Break, exploring its combo utility will be exciting.
Soul Ray

- Input: Ab during Ragnarok Form
Fires a piercing energy beam forward—an iconic trademark of Dragonform Id.
While raw startup is slow, canceling into it from other attacks speeds up startup considerably.
Holding the button extends beam duration while consuming Alternative Gauge.
Like Reginleiv Barrage, it offers strong utility for closing out low-health opponents.
Note that the Ab button is mandatory for this move.
If you unmapped the Ab button because you exclusively use technical inputs, you will be unable to execute it, so seasoned fighting gamers take heed!
Unbound Slam

- Input: Th / L + M / L + U during Ragnarok Form
An untechable command grab that seizes grounded opponents.
While the input notation looks slightly complex, it simply replaces your standard throw input in Dragonform.
Remarkably, it can even grab airborne opponents during combos!
While devastating for opening up turtles, it expends a substantial chunk of Alternative Gauge, so manage resources wisely.
Overall, Id in GBVSR is an Aggressive All-Rounder with Immense Flexibility and Deep Tools!
After testing every tool, my overarching impression of Id is that he is an aggressive character rich in strategic options.
In neutral, base Id functions as a reliable all-rounder balancing great reach with high damage.
Equipped with projectiles, anti-airs, and lunging strikes, he adapts to virtually any matchup, functioning as a true tactical utility tool.
At the same time, his long-range lunges and armor moves carry the brawn of powerhouses like Soriz or Vaseraga, offering a natural fit for players who enjoy those characters.
Then comes his crown jewel: Dragonform.
Packed with flashy, high-impact moves, it provides immense satisfaction and game-ending burst potential.
Were it not for the constraints of this preview event, I would have happily secluded myself in Training Mode for days optimizing routes from Diagodd and launcher setups.
In summary, Id dominates neutral with well-rounded versatility and pressure from Never Enough, before closing out matches with overwhelming dragon might.
While accessible for beginners to grasp fundamentals, his combo ceilings and transformation nuances offer endless depth for dedicated players.
Be sure to take him into battle when he officially releases!

Considering the original Granblue Fantasy: Versus launched with just 11 characters before Rising, the roster has grown tremendously.
For Skyfarers curious about GBVSR who hesitated to set up a PS4, PS5, or PC gaming rig, the Nintendo Switch 2 version offers the perfect gateway.
...What's that? Fighting game command inputs are too complicated?
In GBVSR, special moves can be executed with a single button!
While the video above was an April Fools' joke, simple one-button specials are 100% real.
Take this opportunity to dive right in!
No Buttons Required!? Nintendo Switch 2 Exclusive Gyro VS

While one-button specials are already accessible, the Nintendo Switch 2 version introduces a mode where you don't even need to press buttons: Gyro VS.
Controls couldn't be simpler!

Once the match begins, simply swing your Joy-Con 2 / Joy-Con.
That's it.
Exclusive to offline VS Mode, swinging the Joy-Con 2 / Joy-Con automatically handles movement, attacks, and blocking.
Similar to the button-mashing Super Ultimate mode, it is wonderful for casual sessions with family and friends who don't typically play fighting games.
Flashy Over-the-Top Powerups! Super Ultimate+

This feature is also coming to existing platforms.
Building upon Super Ultimate, the upcoming update introduces Super Ultimate+!

Retaining simple one-button mashing, your chosen character receives dramatic, flashy powerups.
Visually apparent enhancements bring chaotic fun reminiscent of the existing Consecutive Battle Survival mode, so be sure to experience it yourself.
Exclusive to offline VS Mode, it is tailor-made for lively casual gatherings and offline tournaments with friends!
Personally, I'd love to organize a Super Ultimate+ Only Mini-Tournament.
Skyrocketing Guard Crush Rewards! New Chain Attack Battle System

Arriving alongside Id, the new Chain Attack battle system lets players expend Bravery Points (BP) and SBA gauge to follow up from the mid or low hits of a Triple Attack!
今週末に開催されるCEOでNintendo Switch 2版の試遊が決定!

— GBVS/Granblue Fantasy Versus (@gbvs_official) August 14, 2026
This mechanic has generated considerable excitement since its announcement.
As someone who frequently uses Triple Attack overheads, it's a welcome addition that increases the lethal threat of offensive mixups.
With major competitive events like GBVS WORLD TOUR 2026 ongoing, GBVSR continues to surge with vitality two years post-launch.
As a fellow player, I look forward to welcoming many new challengers with this Switch 2 release and update.
See you all on the battlefield!
Believe in Victory...BATTLE 1...ENGAGE!
