When accessing "Metaverse Style," a metaverse media outlet launched in 2021 and operated by the Hong Kong company Metaverse Media Hong Kong Limited, it displays a message saying “This account has been suspended,” making it inaccessible.
Bing's cache confirms that crawlers were able to access it as of October 17, and the Internet Archive shows the same screen as of November 19, 2024, so it is believed to have shut down sometime between those dates.
The Editor-in-Chief Who Was Interested in Sustainable Media Business Was Appointed at Launch
Metaverse StyleDespite being operated by a Hong Kong corporation, "Metaverse Style" was run in Japanese only, and its founding editor-in-chief was Rumi Tomiya, who lives in Hong Kong.
Tomiya (@rumitomiya) joined Accenture Japan Ltd. after graduating and was interested in sustainable media businesses. It was thought that "Metaverse Style" would also be sustainable. However, updates stopped in May of last year.
It was thought that at the very least the site itself would continue to exist, but the media outlet itself could not last for three years.
When it was launched, it was touted as the world's first online media specializing in the metaverse, and it is sad that the world's first online media specializing in the metaverse has quietly disappeared from the world.
I confirmed that the domain is still active, so I wish they would have at least kept the site going and preserved the archives, even if they couldn't continue updating, by using a free web server or something similar.
The Japanese Corporation's Site Is Accessible
The website of the operating company Metaverse Media Hong Kong Limited's subsidiary (Japanese corporation), Metaverse Technologies G.K. (https://metaverse-tech.com/), is accessible, but the Metaverse Style media outlet is no longer mentioned on the site.
The Hong Kong Headquarters Corporation Changed Its Name Twice
Hong Kong Company DirectoryUpon searching for the C.R. Number (Company Registration Number) of the operating company Metaverse Media Hong Kong Limited, which is "3089261," it was found that the company changed its name to "Future Arena Sports (Hong Kong) Limited" on March 21, 2024, and then again a month later on April 15, 2024, to "AKIBA WOW Company Limited."
However, the name of "Metaverse Technologies G.K.," which was a subsidiary at the time of "Metaverse Style's" launch, remains the same. It is unknown whether the capital relationship was dissolved and the parent company became separate, but the site for the Japanese corporation has been shut down, so it is not possible to inquire.
The "AKIBA WOW" Real-World Akihabara Tour Service Is Born
AKIBA WOWA search for AKIBA WOW brings up a site called AKIBAWOW (akibawow.com), with a domain acquired on April 15, 2024.
Since the domain acquisition date is the same as the name change date, could it be that they decided to launch "AKIBAWOW" instead of continuing "Metaverse Style"?
Partners include the "Akiba Tourism Council" and the Hong Kong media outlet "LIKE JAPAN," which disseminates information about Japan.
It's disappointing that a media outlet that provided information on the metaverse, a virtual space on the internet, has now become a real-world tour service, but I wish for the future success of "AKIBA WOW."
