While the 2023-2024 winter in Japan was a mild one, unstable weather has continued because of it.
In the Kanto region, just when it seemed to get warmer entering March, it cooled down all at once. Despite that, pollen is flying, the wind is quite strong, and with low pressure making people feel under the weather, it is a difficult time to go out walking.
In times like these, playing games at home is the best! Since many buzzworthy titles have been released one after another since the start of 2024, I think some people honestly feel they can't keep up with playing them all.
Since the latest games have ultra-beautiful graphics and so much to do, you can get hooked to the point of playing them continuously, but just as you crave something sweet when eating something salty, don't you also have times when you want to play simple retro games?
And speaking of retro games, it must be the Famicom (NES, or Nintendo Entertainment System), which celebrated its 40th anniversary in July 2023!

The results for the Famicom National Poll Vol. 35, "Speaking of Action Games, Which One?", were announced, and the top 20 are being made public on the Famicom 40th Anniversary Campaign Site!
Since action games is a genre with quite a large number of releases even among Famicom titles, one might think the votes would be quite split, but the one that shone as the proud number one was Super Mario Bros., which was far and away the winner with a 41.6% vote share!
I wonder how many times Super Mario Bros. has ranked in the Famicom National Poll held so far, but it is proof of just how much the title is loved around the world.
In the top 20, multiple series titles such as the Mario Bros. series and Mega Man series ranked in, and titles that would become popular series such as Kirby's Adventure, Ghosts 'n Goblins, Castlevania, and Renegade also ranked in.
Using the titles that ranked in this time as a starting point, it might be interesting to try following the series.
For the author, this was the ranking with the titles I have played the most among the top 20 in the history of the Famicom National Poll, but most of those were titles I was unable to clear back then.
Particularly in early Famicom action games, there were scenes where the difficulty was abnormal, and there were parts that were unreasonable for better or worse, but I feel you could say that is also part of the appeal of the Famicom.

I voted for Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen, whose developments shocked me even as a child!
The remake version is also good, but I think the developments of the original version are best, after all. It's sad, though.
