"Super Smash Bros. Special" (hereafter referred to as "Smash Bros. SP") has been selected as the tournament title for EVO Japan 2020 and continues to gain momentum even after a year has passed since its release.
So far, "Joker" from Persona 5, "Yusha" from the Dragon Quest series, and "Banjo & Kazooie" from Banjo and Kazooie's Big Adventure have been distributed as additional DLC characters, and in September, SNK's classic In September, it was announced that "Terry Bogart" from SNK's classic fighting game "FATAL FURY" would join the game.
As a longtime SNK fan, I and the editor-in-chief of Saiga NAK were overjoyed.
As we eagerly awaited the release of the video, the details were announced in the "How to use Terry in Smash Bros SP" broadcasted on November 6 at 10pm!
There is a lot of content in this video!
Before we get into the main topic, a little background knowledge
Once again, Masahiro Sakurai, the director of Smash Bros. SP, gives a very easy-to-understand explanation. But first, a topic of congratulations.
Congratulations to Smash Bros. SP for winning 5 Japan Game Awards and various other awards.
This is proof that Smash Bros. is loved all over the world.
First of all, let me explain about the NEOGEO. Well, the younger generation certainly doesn't get it....
The studio was buzzing at the fact that each piece of software costs JPY30,000.
Mr. Sakurai happily talks about the NEOGEO and SNK, and touches the NEOGEO X.
Mr. Sakurai is too familiar with the NEOGEO and SNK. It's a generation, isn't it?
He also explained about FATAL FURY LEGEND.
Well, when Terry joined the game, many people on the Internet said, "Who is he?
He also explained the story and characters in detail.
He was also kind enough to recommend SNK titles currently available on the Arcade Archives.
If you haven't played them yet, this is a good time to give them a try!
The main topic, "How to use Terry"!
This "How to use Terry" was actually recorded more than a month before the video was released.
So the Terry in the video may be slightly different from the one in the original video.
After the preamble, he introduces how to use Terry with more SNK elements, leaving the younger generation behind!
Every time Mr. Sakurai talked about his maniacal knowledge of SNK and NEOGEO, the studio was buzzing with excitement.
Basic Movements and Normal Attacks
He said that he tried to make Terry's period attire look as cool as possible. Quite stylish indeed!
Like Ryu, Terry's basic movement is to turn around to face the opponent in a 1 on 1 situation.
This is typical of many gaming games.
The weak attack has three stages.
It connects with a jab, then a body blow, then a high kick.
The dash attack is a power charge. In the original, it was a special move.
The strong side attack is a middle kick.
The upper attack is the Rising Uppercut.
The bottom attack is an under kick.
Compared to Ryu, the speed is a little slower. It is nice that he follows the original story in this aspect as well.
Side smash attack is a backspin kick.
The upper smash attack is a wild uppercut.
Down Smash is a Slide Kick
Normal aerial attack is a jump sword.
Jump Terry Kick for front aerial attack
Rear aerial attack is a jumping backward kick
The mid-air attack is the Summer Salt Kick.
The Summer Salt Kick does not exist in the original work, but it was newly created because it requires an upward attack.
The lower mid-air attack is the Jump Shoken Tsuki.
If you hit it well, it has a meteo effect, so be sure to time it right.
Terry's front and back throws are through busters!
The lower throw is a neck breaker drop.
This is a technique used in "The Legend of FATAL FURY: Wild Ambition". This is the same technique used in "The Legend of the Fatal Wolf: Wild Ambition" on the polygon.
Mr. Sakurai mentioned the word "Hyper Neo Geo 64" and the studio was in an uproar.
The upper throw is a glassing uppercut.
An evasive attack is performed on the spot.
There is also an evasive attack, and if you evade on the spot and then quickly press the button, it will counterattack immediately.
The upper body is invincible during evasive attacks.
Special Moves and Commands
Next, special moves are introduced.
The Special Move button (hereafter referred to as "B" in the default setting) is used to perform the normal special move, Power Wave. This is a ground-crawling flying tool.
All special moves, including the Power Wave, can be performed weakly or strongly depending on the length of time the button is pressed.
The NEOGEO has four buttons, so the two levels of weak and strong are reproduced. That's what I'm talking about.
Power Wave can also be used in the air, but it is not a flying tool, but a shockwave with a short distance.
They are reproducing the Power Wave from KOF 96 onward.
For the first time in Smash Bros. Terry has two special horizontal moves, a front special move and a rear special move.
The front special move is the Burn Knuckle.
It can be used by pressing → (in the opponent's direction) + B. This is a rush-type special move.
It can also be performed with the command "↓ ↘ → + A or B *if the fighter is facing right.
All special moves are a little more powerful with the command input, and the effects are a little more flashy.
There are four types of special moves: weak/strong without command, weak/strong with command input, and strong/weak with command input.
The strong one with command input is the most powerful.
The second special move is the Crack Shot.
It can be used by pressing ← (opposite direction of opponent) + B. It is a rush-type move that flies in an arc. It can also be used for a small anti-air attack.
You can also use the command "↓ ↙ ← + A or B *if the fighter is facing right.
Burn Knuckle and Crack Shot are both powerful, but since they are rush-type special moves, they have the disadvantage of going off-stage easily.
However, there is a remedy for this: if you keep typing backward without typing a command, you can shoot back in the direction you want to go, which will help you get back on stage.
The upper special move is the Rising Tackle.
↑ It can be used by pressing up + B. This attack is useful not only for air defense, but also for recovery.
The Rising Tackle can also be performed by pressing the command "↓(Tame) ↑ + A or B." If the command is pressed, the start of the attack is invincible.
Rising Tackle can also be used after other special moves, so it is easier to recover by using Burn Knuckle → Rising Tackle.
The lower special move is the Power Dunk.
You can use it with ↓ + B. This is a special Waza Waza that rises and then strikes. It has a hit point when it rises, so it is useful at close range.
The command input is "→ ↓ ↘ + A or B *when the fighter is facing right*".
Special move cancellations are possible, just like in FATAL FURY and KOF.
By launching a special move immediately after a normal attack hits, you can cancel the return motion of the normal attack and immediately connect to a special move.
This is a familiar technique in gaming, but may not be familiar to Smash Bros. players.
The only way to learn this is to practice and memorize the timing, so practice over and over again and let your body learn it!
You can also cancel special moves with aerial attacks, but be aware that the number of attacks that can be canceled is limited.
The Last Slice
The final trump card is the fan-favorite Triple Gazer! It is a triple power gazer.
When the Triple Gazer hits, there is a sequence of Triple Gazer, Power Dunk, and Buster Wolf.
Wow, it's cool.
Super Special Moves and Commands
The "Power Gazer" and "Buster Wolf" that have suddenly appeared are Super Special Moves in the original game, and of course they can be used in Smash Bros.
When Terry's damage reaches 100% (less than 1/3 of his remaining health), a "GO" sign will appear on his icon. This is the signal to use the super special move.
In this state, the super special move can be used by inputting a command.
The Power Gazer can be used by pressing "↓ ↙ ← ↙ → + A or B *when the fighter is facing right.
It generates a large, powerful column of fire in front of the fighter, which is useful at close range and against air attacks.
It can also be used to surprise a fighter in a brawl, since it can be used to fire left and right.
A simple command can also be used: "↓ ← ↓ → + A or B *when the fighter is facing right.
Buster Wolf can be used by "↓ ↘ → ↓ ↘ → + A or B *when the fighter is facing right.
After a quick lunge, the fighter blows the opponent away. It is useful at mid-range.
There is also a simple command "↓ → ↓ → + A or B *if the fighter is facing right.
The Super Special Move can be used as much as you want when the GO sign is displayed, but it will also be blocked, so be careful when using it.
Voice and Color Variations
Terry's appeals and voices are a mix of old and new from the FATAL FURY and KOF series.
The little gestures are sure to be a hit with fans.
There are eight color variations.
Not only the colors but also the design of the hats are different. The hat design is based on the one used in the anime version, and one can only assume that the development staff is made up of SNK fans with a strong sense of humor.
New Stage "KOF Stadium"
The new stage added to the game is "KOF Stadium".
It is the first special stage in Smash Bros. with walls at the edges of the screen.
Since there is no falling, the key to victory will be how you use the walls.
The wall-piercing effect is also very flashy and exciting.
The background of the stage features guest appearances by SNK characters.
- Andy Bogart
- Joe Higashi
- Tan Foo Lu
- Billy Khan
- Geese Howard
- Rock Howard
- Kim Kaffan
- Ryuji Yamazaki
- Blue Marie
- Athena Asamiya
- Kyo Kusanagi
- Iori Yagami
- Goro Daimon
- Chang Kohan
- Choy Bong-ge
- Ralph Jones
- Clark Steele
- Ryo Sakazaki
- King
- Yuri Sakazaki
and many other characters will add to the stage.
Mr. Sakurai's introduction of each character was so detailed that it was a must-see video.
Unfortunately, the popular character "Mai Shiranui" did not make an appearance, despite the fact that so many characters appeared.
He said that he could not appear because Smash Bros. is a CERO A game for good kids. Well, it's not like we can blame them, since she is wearing that costume.
Characters appearing in the background will be selected based on the BGM.
Please check with your own eyes to see which character will appear with which song.
Terry Tasting by Mr. Sakurai
Here is a demonstration of how Mr. Sakurai will actually use Terry to get around!
"The King of the Big Brawl", the Terry route in the winning brawl, and starting with a 5.0 honkiness level, we aim for 9.9!
"The King of the Brawl" is a set of three characters who are related to each other, a rule I've heard of before.
Check out the video of Mr. Sakurai's fierce battle!
You'll get to hear not only Mr. Sakurai's skill, but also the trivia he shares in between!
A lot of music!
With Terry's entry into the game, additional music has been added.
Terry's theme song has a big band style, which is not suitable for the background music of battles, so it was selected from the entire SNK team.
First, Nintendo narrowed down the list of candidates and selected 50 songs, and then contacted SNK to select the songs that would be suitable for use in the game.
All 50 songs are now implemented! Both Nintendo and SNK are crazy, and in the best possible way!
The best surprise of all was the re-recording of the famous "Psycho Soldier Theme "! And it's in both English and Japanese! How much more will they go for?
The set also comes with a spirit board, so it's a great value for money.
The old Athena drawing is a sign of the times.
New Mii Fighter Costumes!
The 4th stage of Mii Fighter Costume was also announced.
Since this is in conjunction with the delivery of Terry Bogart, the costumes are from classic fighting games.
- Nakoruru [Swordsmanship] SAMURAI SPIRITS
- Ryo Sakazaki [Fighting] Fist of the Dragon and Tiger
- Iori Yagami [Fighting] THE KING OF FIGHTERS
- Akira [Fighting] Virtua Fighter
- Jackie [Fighting] Virtua Fighter
Each is priced at JPY81 (tax included) and will be distributed on November 6, 2019.
New Amiibo's will also be released.
New Amiibo of Simon, Chromium, and GaoGaen will be released.
The price is 1,650 yen each (including tax) and will be released on November 8, 2019.
Ver. 6.0 Update Information
There will also be a Ver. 6.0 update for Smash Bros. SP.
This time the dedicated rooms will be slightly improved.
You will be able to send fixed messages in dedicated rooms.
The player who created the room can now change the rules.
Stage settings now include "Battlefield Random" and "Endpoint Random".
"VIP only" can now be set as the purpose of the room.
"Anyone is welcome" rooms are now open to anyone without a key.
Terry Bogart will be available on November 6!
The "Terry Set", which includes the new DLC character "Terry Bogart", music, and a spirit board, will be available on November 6. The price is 662JPY (tax included) 5.99USD.
It is included in the Fighter Pass, so those who have already purchased the Fighter Pass can use it right away!
How will Terry's entry into the fray, with its many powerful special moves such as command input, change the balance of power in the game?
The author also had a quick touch, and the feel is quite similar to Terry from FATAL FURY and KOF! Fun to use!
