News

Blizzard Entertainment's team-based action shooter Overwatch 2 will launch Season 9 "Champions" on Wednesday, February 14, 2024.
Significant changes will be implemented, vastly differing from the routine seasonal updates held in the past.

Overwatch 2 Season 9 Kicks Off February 14

Overwatch 2 Season 9 Champions is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, February 14, 2024.
While the game has previously introduced new heroes or adjusted existing ones at the start of a new season, Season 9 brings fundamental updates to Competitive play and the overall game systems.

Competitive Adjustments and Rank Reset

While Overwatch 2 features various game modes, Competitive is particularly popular as it tests the skills of both individuals and teams.
Since wins and losses directly reflect a player's rank, matches are more intense than usual.
There have been ongoing concerns regarding the transparency and balance of rank fluctuations in Competitive play.
In Season 9, adjustments will be made to the rank update and Skill Division systems to increase transparency for each match.

Along with these changes, Blizzard has introduced the new highest rank, Champion.
Furthermore, Competitive ranks will be reset for all players.
This provides a perfect opportunity to start from the same line, whether for long-time veterans or new players.

Projectile Size Increase

In Overwatch 2, quick reactions and precision are vital, but hit detection has sometimes felt overly strict.
In Season 9, the size of all projectiles—including bullets and rockets—will be increased to stabilize accuracy, as follows:

  • Hitscan projectiles with high rates of fire or large spread: increased by 0.05m
  • High-precision hitscan projectiles: increased by 0.08m
  • Shotgun pellets and projectiles with very high rates of fire: increased by 0.05m
  • Projectiles with a speed greater than 50m per second: increased by 0.10m
  • Projectiles with a speed less than 50m per second: increased by 0.15m
  • Very large projectiles with a base size exceeding 0.5m are excluded from these changes

Health Increase for All Heroes

In conjunction with the increased projectile sizes, the health of all heroes will also increase.
As a result, the number of hits required to defeat an enemy will increase by at least one for most heroes.
By reducing the frequency of "instant deaths" that can feel unfair, the gunplay is expected to feel more rewarding.

  • Heroes with 150–175 health: increased by 25
  • Heroes with 200–300 health: increased by 50
  • Heroes with 300 or more health (Tanks): increased by 75–100

New Passives for All Heroes and Health Regeneration

In Overwatch 2, the appeal of team play stems from the roles assigned to each hero: Tank, Damage, and Support.
However, the high impact of individual player decisions on the entire team has been identified as an issue. Therefore, starting in Season 9, an automatic health regeneration passive will be added to all heroes.

Furthermore, new passives will be added to each role, steering the game toward balancing individual influence while maintaining the excitement of team battles, including:

  • All heroes: Regenerate 20 health per second after not taking damage for 5 seconds
  • Damage: Dealing damage reduces the target's healing received by 20%
  • Support: Health regeneration start time reduced to 2.5 seconds
  • Tank: Reduced knockback taken, reduced Ultimate charge gained by enemies from healing and damage, and increased health in Role Queue modes
