Breaking: Riot Games to End Active Development of 2XKO in December 2026; Updates to Cease While Servers Remain Online
News

Riot Games announced that it will end active development of its fighting game, 2XKO, in December 2026.
Updates will cease after Riot Games adds Lux and Samira as new champions in 2026 updates.
However, Riot Games plans to keep online servers operational.

2XKO to End Updates in December 2026

Developed and operated by Riot Games, known for League of Legends and VALORANT, the fighting game, 2XKO, entered Early Access on PC in October 2025 and launched its official release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in January 2026.
Although its journey was far from smooth—with team downsizing announced just three weeks after launch—it brought immense hype to the esports scene, headlined by tournaments at EVO Japan 2026 and Evo 2026.
Now, Riot Games announced that updates for 2XKO will conclude following a bug-fix patch in December 2026.

The reason was simple: "we [Riot Games] haven’t seen enough players stick with the game to get to a path toward sustainability."
Updates featuring two new champions will roll out through 2026, and servers will continue running in 2027 and beyond, narrowly avoiding an outright service shutdown.

Upcoming Roadmap Including 2 New Champions

Lux, the Lady of Luminosity

First, Riot Games will discontinue sales of KO Points as of Friday, August 21, 2026.
Furthermore, Riot Games will issue full refunds for all purchases made prior to Friday, August 21, 2026.
Check the 2XKO Support Page for details regarding refunds.

Patch 1.3.1, scheduled for release on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, will introduce Lux, the Lady of Luminosity.
Simultaneously, a bundle containing nearly all customization content in 2XKO will be available for purchase for 6,000 yen.
Riot Games also confirmed it will disable ranked lobbies and the Battle Pass.

Samira, the Desert Rose

Additionally, Patch 1.3.3 will release in October 2026.
Samira, the Desert Rose will arrive as the final additional champion for 2XKO.
This marks the last feature update, with Patch 1.3.5 delivering final bug fixes in late December 2026.

Competitive Scene to Continue Unchanged Through End of 2026

Riot Games' sanctioned tournament circuit, the 2XKO Competitive Series, will proceed as scheduled through the end of 2026.
The same applies to the domestic Japanese tournament circuit, the 2XKO Japan Series (2XJS).

Riot Games: "Continuing Development on Hope Would Be Irresponsible"

Riot Games also elaborated on the reasoning behind the decision.
While the game successfully reached new player demographics that traditional titles like League of Legends and VALORANT could not, player engagement plateaued even following major content updates.

Stating frankly that "to attempt another year hoping for a way forward would have been an irresponsible choice for players and the dev team," Riot Games published the full announcement on the official Riot Games website.
