Discord has released a statement regarding the incident where a bug blocked approximately 200 accounts from late June to the first week of July 2026.
Discord Support addressed the cause and details, offering an apology along with future countermeasures.
What Caused the Discord Account Blocks? Safety System Bug Occurs After Staff Review Process
Official Discord Support XDiscord cited a safety system malfunction as the cause for the recent account blocks.
Staff Review Accounts Following Harmful Account Detection
Normally, Discord determined whether a user account was harmful by matching it against known harmful content.
However, since this similarity matching alone could result in false positives for legitimate accounts, staff members always conducted a review process before taking actions such as blocking.
During the review process, Discord temporarily suspended uploads rather than suspending the account entirely.
Safety System Bug Occurs After Review Process
However, Discord explained that a subsequent bug triggered suspensions and blocked multiple accounts this time, despite staff members clearing them during the review.
The bug affected approximately 8,200 accounts from May to the third week of June 2026, and also blocked approximately 200 accounts due to the same bug between the fourth week of June and Sunday, July 5.
Apology and Steps Toward Preventing Recurrence
Discord apologized to the affected accounts and anxious users, stating, "If your account was blocked, this explanation wouldn't make it right."
Regarding the blocked accounts, they stated that they have now fully restored all affected accounts.
Moving forward, they pledge to work on preventing a recurrence and are considering better safety measures to ensure that safety systems do not unfairly punish legitimate accounts.
