Chinese smartphone manufacturer OPPO held a new product announcement event on Thursday, February 20, 2025, local time, announcing the OPPO Find N5, the world's thinnest foldable smartphone.
It will be sold globally, including in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore, but availability in Japan was undecided at the time of writing.
World's Thinnest Foldable "OPPO Find N5" Quick Review

Foldable smartphones can use a large screen when opened, providing a wider display area for mobile gaming. However, a drawback of foldable phones was their thickness and weight when folded. Foldable smartphones released by various companies in 2024 made rapid progress in becoming thinner and lighter, and have now reached a size comparable to a normal smartphone.

The main specs of the "OPPO Find N5 (global model)" include Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, 16GB of memory, and 512GB of storage. The outer display when closed is 6.62 inches, with a resolution of 2,616×1,140 pixels, a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz, and a maximum brightness of 2450nits. The camera, co-developed with the long-established camera manufacturer Hasselblad, is equipped with three lenses: a 50-megapixel wide-angle, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle, and a 50-megapixel 3x telephoto.

And its biggest feature, the body size when closed, is 160.87×74.42×8.93mm. The "OPPO Find N5" has pursued thinness to the very limit, specifying the thickness to two decimal places. Moreover, its weight is 229g, which is also light for a foldable smartphone. It is even lighter than some typical smartphones equipped with large displays of slightly less than 7 inches.

This thin body houses a large-capacity 5,600mAh battery. Recently, smartphones from Chinese manufacturers have been adopting batteries using new materials like silicon-carbon, leading to a trend of increasing capacity while maintaining the same size as conventional batteries.
The "OPPO Find N5" supports OPPO's proprietary VOOC rapid charging, allowing for charging at 80W wired and 50W wireless. A visible slide switch on the side of the body is an alert slider, typically found on higher-end models of its sister brand OnePlus, allowing you to switch between three silent modes.

The price is 2,499 Singapore Dollars, which is quite expensive at approximately 280,000 yen. While it serves as both a smartphone and a tablet in one device, this price should probably be seen as reflecting OPPO's technological capability. For example, to achieve its thinness, they succeeded in reducing the size of just the hinge part by 26%. Furthermore, despite being a foldable, it also supports IPX6, IPX8, and IPX9 water resistance ratings.

When the body is opened, it reveals a large 8.16-inch display with 2,248×2,480 pixels. The maximum refresh rate is 120Hz, and the maximum brightness is 2100nits. Handwriting input is also possible using the separately sold stylus "OPPO Pen". And since it supports Google's "Circle to Search", you can instantly search by circling something you're curious about with the pen.

The size when opened is 160.87×146.58×4.21mm. Some foldable smartphones are in the 4mm range, but it is the thinnest even among them. Also, several tablets claiming to be thin are commercially available, but none are under 5mm.

Foldable smartphones not only offer a large display when opened but can also simultaneously run two apps using split-screen display, allowing you to "display social media while playing a game," for example. Also, ColorOS 15, the modified Android 15 adopted by the "OPPO Find N5" (developed by OPPO), allows for easy switching between multiple screens, and you can even use up to three screens by rotating and swapping them.

Furthermore, if you fold the body into an L-shape and launch the camera, shooting without a tripod is possible. Video streaming in this style is also an option.

The "OPPO Find N5" has one more significant new feature: collaboration with Apple products.
Current macOS can mirror the iPhone screen within the PC. By using the "O+ Connect" app, the "OPPO Find N5" can similarly mirror its screen to a Mac desktop. In that state, copying files by drag and drop is also possible. Furthermore, using the remote desktop function, you can even use the Find N5 like a "mini MacBook"!

With high performance, good camera capabilities, and the ability to use a large screen exceeding 8 inches when needed while remaining smartphone-sized when folded, the "OPPO Find N5", which can also collaborate with Mac, might possibly be a smartphone suitable for Apple product users as well. It is definitely distinct from other companies' products and can be said to be a foldable smartphone with unique characteristics.
